Essential Spring Cleaning Steps to Prepare Your Pool for Life After Winter

As winter fades in most of the country, even here in Ohio, where it just started snowing again in March as I write this, the promise of warmer days is around the corner, it's time for pool owners to gear up for the spring season. After months of hibernation, your pool will require a little TLC to get back into pristine condition for the upcoming swim season. Whether you're a seasoned pool owner or a first timer, here are some essential steps to ensure your pool is ready to make a splash this spring:

  1. Inspect and Clean the Your Pool Cover:
Pool covers are an essential aspect of winterizing and protecting your pool, they take the brunt of the hard winter season, so your pool doesn’t. As it’s the most vulnerable, let’s start by removing the pool cover carefully. Clear away any debris, leaves, or standing water accumulated on top of the cover. Once removed, clean and dry the cover thoroughly before storing it away. This will prevent mold, mildew, and other damage, ensuring next winter you won’t need to run out and get a new one.

  1. Check Your Pool Equipment:
Inspect all your gadgets, devices, tools and any pool equipment including pumps, filters, heaters, and skimmers for any signs of damage, wear and tear, and ensure everything is fully functional, especially any electronics. If you notice any issues, address them accordingly.

  1. Clean and Replenish Pool Water:
Depending on how you maintained your pool during the winter, you might need to drain and refill the water or simply top it off to the appropriate level. Use a pool testing kit to check the water chemistry including pH levels, alkalinity, and chlorine concentration. Balance the chemicals as needed to achieve optimal water quality for swimming. If you’ve got Aiper’s new Communication Buoy, this is a great time to establish a baseline and look to improve your pool health.

  1. Remove Winterization Materials:
If you’ve gone above and beyond with your winter prep and added more than a pool cover, you’ll want to remember to remove any of these external agents to prevent your pool water from becoming contaminated when new chemicals are introduced and prevent any health risk to you and your family.
  1. Clean and Scrub Pool Surfaces:
Manually brush and scrub the pool walls, floors, and tiles to remove any algae, scale, or dirt buildup that may have accumulated over the winter. Pay special attention to corners, crevices, and areas around water features where debris tends to accumulate. Vacuum the pool thoroughly to remove any remaining debris. Any of your Seagull or Scuba Series Aiper devices will be a tremendous help in this step, and while they won’t get your pool in tip top shape on their own for this first cleaning, it’ll definitely be nice to have a cleaning partner getting your pool ready, faster. Once you’ve given your pool a thorough cleaning yourself, your robotic pool cleaning friends will help keep your pool in top shape.

  1. Inspect and Repair Pool Decking:
Those with pool decks, including concrete, stone, or wood surfaces, for any cracks, chips, or other damage. Repair or resurface as needed to ensure a safe and visually appealing pool area.

  1. Check Safety Features:
Inspect all safety features such as pool fences, gates, alarms, and rescue equipment to ensure they are in good working condition. Safety should always be a top priority when it comes to pool maintenance.

  1. Consider Professional Service:
We at Aiper, pride ourselves in helping make pool maintenance as streamlined a process as possible, but we acknowledge we can’t be there for every need, and some jobs require a professional’s touch. If you're unsure about any aspect of pool maintenance or if you simply prefer to leave it to the experts, consider hiring a professional pool service company to handle the spring opening process. If you’ve done steps 1-7, you’re making their job a lot easier in identifying and filling the gaps of your upkeep.
Aiper hopes that by following these steps, you can enjoy a clean, safe pool experience. Let’s make your spring cleaning easier!
