As temperatures drop, grass is getting ready to make serious gains, and these five steps are what to focus on right now.

Video Script & Key Takeaways

1. Smarter Watering as Temperatures Drop (00:23)

As hot weather fades, your watering should drop with it. Overwatering and excess moisture are some of the biggest contributors to fungal problems, so depending on your climate, plan on roughly a 40% reduction in fall. In Ginja’s region, that means going from 1¾ inches a week down to 1 to 1¼ inches. Check your local extension or agricultural department for the recommended seasonal schedule. Too little water is a risk as well, because a stressed lawn is more likely to suffer winter damage.

A smart sprinkler like the Aiper IrriSense 2 makes this adjustment easy. You can change the weekly amount with a click, and its built-in rain sensor stops watering during rainfall while app weather alerts let you skip schedules when weather is on the way.

2. Adjusting Your Mowing Height for Fall (02:09)

Keeping the grass tall all summer is good advice, but as temperatures drop, start bringing the mowing height down progressively, not all at once. In areas with snow or a lot of winter moisture, most cool-season lawns can eventually go down to around an inch, or as low as your mower allows. Grasses like St. Augustine, Bahia, and Centipede are the main exceptions.

Scalping the lawn at this time of year turns a green lawn brown or yellow, and it tends to stay that way most of the winter. Ginja mows twice a week and lowers the mower one notch about every fourth mow. The goal is to keep long grass from lying over, matting together, and holding moisture through winter, which gives a shorter, cleaner canopy a better chance to breathe.

3. Managing Thatch, Debris & Compaction (03:37)

Three machines handle this job, and fall is the most beneficial time of year for all of them:

Dethatcher: removes dead grass and debris sitting on the soil surface, giving water and fertilizer a clearer path in.

Scarifier: rips through the thatch layer, encourages new growth, and opens the soil surface so water penetrates more easily.

Aerator: pulls cores from the soil to relieve compaction and let water, nutrients, and oxygen in, which is especially useful on high-traffic lawns.

Ginja prioritizes dethatching and scarifying, and aerates only when the lawn has compaction issues. If you do all three, dethatch first, core aerate second, and scarify last, so the final pass breaks up the aeration plugs and cleans everything up.

4. Build a Stronger Lawn with Overseeding (04:59)

If your lawn is thin, patchy, or did not come through summer the way you wanted, fall is one of the best times to fix it. Cooler, more consistent temperatures, warm soil, and less competition from summer weeds make germination much easier than in spring.

First, identify the grass you already have so the seed you put down is identical or compatible. A small sample taken to a local nursery or home improvement store is the easiest way to find out. The most important part of seeding is seed-to-soil contact, which is why dethatching, scarifying, and aerating help so much. Once the seed is down, keep the surface consistently moist, without flooding it, until new grass comes through.

5. Feed Your Lawn for Fall & Prepare for Spring (06:43)

Ginja calls this the nitrogen blitz: instead of one heavy application, spoon-feed small amounts of nitrogen more often. On his lawn, that means straight ammonium sulfate (20-0-0) every two weeks at about 1.5 to 2 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft, through September, October, and November, and into winter in milder climates, as long as the lawn is still responding.

Straight ammonium sulfate feeds only the nutrient the lawn needs, and nitrogen the grass does not use can stay in the soil as temperatures fall. The exception is potassium, which is worth adding if your soil is low in it. If you live where soil pH is low or lime is applied every spring and fall, use calcium nitrate as the nitrogen source instead. It does not bank nitrogen in the soil as well, but it still gives the active lawn readily available nitrogen.

Aggressive fall and winter nitrogen programs are not a new trend. Turf managers have used them for generations, and later research linked them to better winter color and, in some studies, spring green-up several weeks earlier.

Overseeding? Adjust Your Fertilizer Plan (09:09)

If you are also overseeding, skip the blitz at first. Hold off on fertilizer for about 3 weeks after the new grass has germinated, then cut the rate in half, to about 0.75 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft, and keep applying every 2 weeks.

Want more pro tips? Subscribe to the Aiper Official YouTube channel for weekly how-to videos on lawn care, pool maintenance, and smart outdoor living.

Related Videos

Aiper Pro Club Episode 8: How to Keep Your Pool Clean in Autumn
    10,578 views

Aiper Pro Club Episode 7: Seven Watering Mistakes Killing Your Lawn
    11,315 views

Aiper Pro Club Episode 5: 5 Early Spring Lawn Care Mistakes and How to Fix Them
    76,935 views

Aiper Pro Club Episode 3: 5 Tips for Spring Garden Care
    145,282 views

Aiper Pro Club Episode 4: How to Balance Your Pool Water
    240,496 views

Published: October 18, 2026 | Views: 2,114 | Source: Aiper Official About This Video In this episode of the Aiper Pro Club, lawn care expert Ginja explains why autumn is the most important season for setting up a healthier lawn next spring.
