How to Calculate Pool Surface Area

Calculating the surface area is the first step in determining how much paint, primer, or finish your pool needs. The formula changes depending on the geometric shape of your pool.

Rectangular

The simplest calculation. Multiply the length by the width.

Length × Width
Circular

Find the radius (half the diameter) and multiply it by itself, then by Pi (3.14).

3.14 × Radius²
Oval / Oblong

Multiply the long length by the maximum width, then multiply by a curvature factor (approx. 0.8).

Length × Width × 0.8
Kidney

Measure the total length and the width of both “bulbs.” Add the widths together first.

(Width A + Width B) × Length × 0.45
Roman

Calculate the center as a rectangle, then add the area of the semi-circle ends.

(L × W) + (3.14 × Radius²)
L-Shaped

Break the pool into two separate rectangles, calculate both, and add them together.

Pro Tip: When calculating for **Finish** (paint or topcoat), always multiply your final surface area by the number of coats (2 for minimum, 3 for recommended) to ensure you order enough material!
