First check that the filter basket is clear and the robot is fully charged.
First check that the filter basket is clear and the robot is fully charged. For irregular pools, switch to Auto mode (X1 Pro Max) or Wall+Floor mode. The X1 can cross steps in escape mode but does not clean them — missed step surfaces are expected behavior.
Filter Basket Check (Most Common Cause)
A clogged or torn filter basket is the leading cause of reduced cleaning performance. After every 2–3 runs, remove the basket, rinse under a hose against the flow direction, and inspect for tears. A torn mesh significantly reduces suction. Replacement baskets are not on the aiper.com website; order via support ticket at aiper.com/us/process-a-warranty.
Mode Selection for Your Pool Shape
Rectangular pools: Floor mode for floor-only; Wall+Floor mode for full coverage. Irregular / kidney-shaped pools (X1 Pro Max): Use Auto mode — the 4-sensor navigation adapts to non-rectangular shapes. The X1 base model uses a grid pattern; if it appears to cover the same area repeatedly, restart the robot from the center of the pool for better initial mapping.
Steps — Robot Crosses But Doesn’t Clean Them
The X1 Pro and Pro Max are designed to cross pool steps rather than clean them. When the robot encounters a step, it activates escape mode (slight reverse + turn) to navigate past it. This is normal. Step surfaces must be cleaned manually. The robot will not get permanently stuck on standard pool steps.
Robot Covers the Same Area Repeatedly
Symptoms: robot covers 30% of pool area and loops. Cause: gyroscope or sensor calibration drift after extended use. Fix: (1) Remove from pool. (2) Hold power for 10 seconds to reset. (3) Re-enter pool in Auto mode. If the issue persists after reset, place the robot in the center of the pool rather than at the edge to allow full navigation mapping.
